Parainfluenza viruses are distributed throughout the world mainly affecting children 5 years of age. In adults, parainfluenza infections are generally mild. Serotype 2 causes laryngotracheobronchitis wheras Type 3 is an important cause of bronchiolitis & pneumonia in infants. Type 4 parainfluenza virus causes mild infections.
